Gynecomastia – An Overview

Gynecomastia Self-esteem, self-confidence…buzz words that define the way we feel about ourselves and how those feelings affect our relationships, job and physical activities. For guys, especially athletes, living with gynecomastia or “man boobs” can be emotionally debilitating. Some men may even avoid physical activities and intimacy in order to hide their condition.

What is it?

Gynecomastia is a condition of over-developed or enlarged breasts in men that can occur at any age. It’s causes include puberty, health conditions affecting hormones, obesity, aging and the use of steroids or certain medications.

The symptoms of gynecomastia are swelling of the breast tissue and tenderness. It is also characterized by excess localized fat and glandular tissue and can be present in one or both breasts. Generally, gynecomastia isn’t a serious problem, but it can be tough to cope with.

What is gynecomastia surgery?

Plastic surgery to correct gynecomastia is technically called “reduction mammaplasty.” It is a specialized surgery that reduces breast size and flattens and enhances the contours of the chest. Sometimes if gynecomastia is severe, the weight of the excess tissue may cause the breasts to sag and stretch the areola. If this is the case, the position and size of the areola can be surgically improved along with the reduction of excess skin.

Who is a good surgery candidate?

  • Men who are bothered by the size of their breasts
  • Men with a positive outlook and goals for improvement
  • Men who have realistic expectations
  • Men who are physically healthy – who do not have a medical illness that could impair healing
  • Men whose breast development has stabilized
  • Men whose condition cannot be remedied with alternative medical treatments
  • Non-smokers and non-drug users
